Directing Work Opportunities on a UK Student Visa

The UK is a popular destination for international students seeking quality education and diverse experiences. Many students also wish to work during their studies to support themselves and gain valuable experience. However, the UK government has strict regulations in place to ensure that the student route is not exploited for employment purposes. In this guide, we address common questions regarding what type of work is permitted for students on a UK student visa.

What Work Can You Do on a UK Student Visa?

The type and amount of work you can undertake while on a UK student visa depend on several factors:

  1. Course Level: Whether your course is below, at, or above degree level.
  2. Full-Time or Part-Time: Whether you are enrolled in a full-time or part-time course.
  3. Institution Compliance: Whether your educational institution complies with UK immigration laws.

Let’s explore the allowed work options based on these factors.

Full-Time, Degree Level Course at a UK Institution

If you are enrolled in a full-time course at a UK higher education institution at degree level or above, and your institution complies with immigration regulations, you can work as follows:

  • Part-time during term time (up to 20 hours per week)
  • Full-time during vacations, including before the course begins
  • On a work placement as part of your course
  • Full-time as a postgraduate doctor or dentist on a recognized foundation program (with permission)
  • As a Student Union Sabbatical Officer for up to 2 years (with permission)

If your institution does not comply with immigration rules, your work options are more limited. You can only work during term-time if it’s part of your course or as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer for up to 2 years.

Full-Time Course Below Degree Level at a UK Institution

If your course is below degree level (e.g., diploma or certificate), the rules are similar, with one key difference: you can work a maximum of 10 hours per week during term time, rather than 20. Full-time work during vacations and before the course starts is permitted.

Part-Time Students

Unfortunately, if you are enrolled as a part-time student on a UK student visa, you are not allowed to undertake any employment.

Understanding “Term Time”

Term time varies among universities, colleges, and schools in the UK. Typically, educational institutions have three terms per year separated by vacation periods. Your specific term dates are determined by your institution, and you can find this information on their website or course materials.

Self-Employment and Running a Business

Generally, self-employment and running a business are not allowed on a student visa. You are prohibited from engaging in business activities or setting up a business with a significant financial or beneficial interest. This includes sole proprietorships, partnerships, and roles where you have a significant ownership stake.

Other Prohibited Work

You are not allowed to work as an entertainer or professional sportsperson, including sports coaching. Engaging in any form of performance or receiving payment for such activities is not permitted.

Post-Course Employment

Even after you finish your course, you are still bound by the same visa conditions. However, the period after completing your course is considered outside of term time, providing you with more flexibility in terms of working hours.

Volunteering

While studying in the UK, you are allowed to volunteer. However, it’s important to distinguish between volunteering and voluntary work. Volunteers typically assist charitable or public sector organizations without pay, contracts, or substituting for employees. Voluntary work, on the other hand, often involves payment or contractual obligations and is subject to employment restrictions similar to regular work.

Child Students

Child students aged 16 and above on a Child Student visa can work up to 10 hours per week during term time and without restrictions during holidays. They can also participate in course-related work placements, subject to specific requirements.

Please note that immigration rules and policies can change, so it’s essential to stay informed and seek advice tailored to your situation.
